Funding & Project Proposals

The Wirth Institute represents seven Central European countries: Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Our principal mandate is to raise the profile of Central Europe and Central European Studies in Canada and to provide a leadership role in a network of cooperation in this field with other Canadian universities. We act as an academic and cultural institute and sponsor and organize lectures, conferences, artistic festivals, symposia, concerts, exhibitions and other scholarly and cultural events with an Austrian and central European theme. We also engage in international cooperative ventures with institutions in the United States and Europe.

We collaborate with a diverse group of partners within the university community in the task of having the University of Alberta recognized as the leading center for Central European Studies in Canada. We also work with the Embassies of Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia to maintain and enhance Canada's most outstanding resource centre for Central European Studies for the use of scholars throughout Canada and the United States.

The Institute generally co-sponsors projects and initiatives based on a matching funding principle; where at minimum 50% of funding is contributed externally. In some cases where a project is seen as core to the mandate of the institute, is representative of several of our member countries, provides high visibility and exposure, and is strategically aligned to our academic, research, student and community engagement goals, exceptions to this funding principle may apply.

Proposals for potential sponsorships or collaboration should be made at least 6 months prior to the anticipated date of the project or event. In the interest of ensuring that all of our events fit well into the academic schedule of the Faculty of Arts and the Institute, and that appropriate planning, including marketing and communications, can take place, no proposals will be considered in the period of June to August immediately preceding the fall semester beginning in September.

All submissions should be made in writing and sent to:
