POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: RESEARCH ASSISTANT, CROATIAN CASE STUDY, "EAST CENTRAL EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES AND CULTURES IN CAPE BRETON, NOVA SCOTIA"

The Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies announces the competition for a research assistant for the Croatian Case Study associated with the Croatian-Cape Breton segment of the web portal “East Central European Communities and Cultures in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.” The RA will work under the direction of and in collaboration with the Principal Investigator Dr. Marcia Ostashewski and other lead researchers and members of the Team on this SSHRC-funded project. They will carry out research on Cape Breton’s Croatian historical immigrant population, their community, and cultural activities (especially related to expressive culture).  The RA will locate relevant materials through ethnographic and archival research, generate a research report, and create interactive multimedia applications and educational resources to populate the Croatian-Cape Breton segment of the web portal.

The RA will spend four weeks in Cape Breton investigating the case study and meeting with research communities and partners. Participation in Team meetings, symposia, workshops, and community events may be required as part of the outreach program for the project during the four-week field research period and at other times for the duration of the project. The costs of travel and accommodation will be covered and an honorarium to cover living expenses will be provided.

Croatian and English language fluency (reading and writing) required; knowledge of related languages an asset. Experience with, competency, and creativity in multimedia and expressive culture and its study is strongly desired.

Starting Date: on or around September 1, 2013. The final results should be completed by January 15, 2014.
