The Santiago de Cuba program is built upon the strong partnership between the Augustana Faculty of the University of Alberta in Camrose, Alberta, and Universidad de Oriente in Santiago de Cuba. In the birthplace of the Cuban revolution, students are challenged to explore the political and historical lenses which interpret Latin American and world relations.

University of Alberta students spend a semester in Santiago de Cuba at the Universidad de Oriente, earning full academic credit. With the expertise of Universidad de Oriente and Augustana faculty, students explore the historical, social, cultural and political realities of this island nation. While in Santiago, students live in Cuban homes, study with Cuban professors, interact with Cuban organizations and learn to communicate in Spanish.

The Santiago de Cuba program is open to all University of Alberta students. Students from other post‐secondary institutions may also apply and participate in the program. Please contact Dr. Sandra Rein at srein@ualberta.ca if you are from another institution and would like to apply to the program.

Students from the University of Alberta who are participating in the Santiago de Cuba program may be eligible to receive a Study Abroad grant of $2150. Students receiving the award will need to have a minimum 2.7 GPA over the last two academic terms in order to be considered eligible.
