Donald W. Clarke Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

This award has been established  by Patricia Clarke in memory of her husband Donald W. Clarke, BSc ’41, MSc ‘43.

Eligibility: Open to full-time, non-graduating undergraduate students in Biological Sciences who would like to undertake a summer research project in animal physiology or developmental biology.  Students may not hold this award simultaneously with either an NSERC or AIHS summer award.

Value: $4500 (plus top-up)

Application: Interested students must find a faculty mentor in the Department of Physiology or the Department of Biological Sciences and in collaboration with him/her prepare a research proposal that clearly specifies the role of the student and the training value to the student. The mentor must sign a statement on the application indicating he/she is prepared to subsidize this award in the amount of $1125 (minimum) in order for it to at least equal the value of an NSERC Undergraduate Scholarship ($5625).

Applications are due in March (date to be determined) to the Biological Sciences Student Services, CW312 Biological Sciences. Preference will be given to the proposal that offers the best training opportunity.  Your academic record will be considered but will not be the sole selection criterion.

NSERC CGS- M

Available to students in their fourth year of an eligible undergraduate program (and to first year graduate students) who intend to pursue in the following year full-time graduate studies at the masters or in some cases the doctoral level in one of the areas of the Natural Sciences or Engineering. Applicant must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada. Apply directly to NSERC. Information and application forms (FORM 201) can be found on the NSERC website at:  www.nserc.ca

Requirements: GPA of at least 3.5 in each of the last two completed years of study.

Value: $17,500 (for one year).

NSERC Deadline:  December (date TBD).  

NSERC Summer Studentship (USRA)

Available to students registered full-time in an eligible academic program leading to a bachelor's degree with a major or honors concentration in one of the Natural Sciences or in Engineering. Student must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and have completed all the course requirements of at least the first year of university study (or two academic terms) of her/her bachelor's degree at the time they hold the award. Requirements: GPA of at least 3.0 in their program up to the time of application.

Value: at least $1,406.25/month (for 4 months)

AIHS Summer Studentship

Available to undergraduate students with an exceptional academic record who wish to participate in summer research in a medical or health-related field. (Students who are currently in the last term of their undergraduate degrees must have applied either to Medical School or to a graduate program that would start in the coming Fall).  Detailed information regarding selection criteria and forms for the Undergraduate Summer Studentship can be found on the AIHS website at:

Value : Approximately $1,400/month (the award is tenable for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 4 months during period May to August)

Biological Sciences Undergraduate Awards AstraZeneca Undergraduate Scholarship in Biology

Field of Study: Biology

Value: $4,000

Number: 1

Conditions : To be awarded once every three years to a student with superior academic achievement entering their fourth year of studies in Honors or Specialization Biology in the Faculty of Science. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of academic standing. In the event that a suitable candidate cannot be found in Biology, this award may be given to a student in the fourth year of either honors or specialization Chemistry or Pharmacology.

Henry Hearn Memorial Scholarship in Plant Biology

Field of Study: Plant Biology

Value: $1,250

Conditions : To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of the BSc Honors or Specialization Program in Plant Biology. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing.

Donor : Endowed through a bequest from the Estate of the late Henry George Hearn of Edmonton.

Lakshmi Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Plant Biology

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement entering the third year of the BSc Honors or Specialization program in Plant Biology. Recipient will be chosen on the basis of academic standing.

Organization of Botany Students Award

Field of Study: Botany

Value: $400

Number: 1

Conditions: Awarded annually to an undergraduate student who has taken one Botany course in Plant Biology and has achieved a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.3. The award shall be based on contribution to the Botany Department and involvement in the activities of the Organization of Botany students. This award may be given to a full-time student taking less than a full normal course load. Preference will be given to students in the Plant Biology program.

Bill Paranchych Memorial Scholarship

Field of Study: Microbiology

Value: $3,250

Number: 2

Conditions: To be awarded annually to a student with superior academic achievement, who is not in receipt of another major award, entering fourth year Honors or Specialization Microbiology or Cell Biotechnology. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing.

Donor: Endowed by family and friends, in memory of Bill Paranchych, Professor of Microbiology and former Chair of Microbiology.

William Rowan Memorial Prizes

Field of Study: Ecology, Systematics and Evolution, or Physiology and Developmental Biology who are doing studies in Animal Biology.

Value: $1,250

Conditions : To be awarded annually to students with superior academic achievement entering the fourth year of the Honors Biology program in the area of environmental biology, systematics and evolution, or physiology and developmental biology. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic standing.

A Laurence and Cec Chevalier Undergraduate Scholarship in Plant Biology

An Outstanding Research in Genetics Prize

Conditions : Awarded to students enrolled in any year of study for a Bachelor of Science in the Molecular Genetics stream with superior academic achievement in Biology 499. Selection based on the best presentation of a research project in Biology 499, selection is based on the oral and/or written component of the presentation.

Dr David Schindler Undergraduate Scholarship in Environmental Science

Field of Study: Enviromental Science

Value: $1,000

Conditions : Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement entering fourth year Honours or Specialization in an Environmental Science degree who is considering graduate studies in an environmental science field. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement. Preference will be given first to a student entering fourth year Honors or Specialization in Ecology and second to a student entering fourth year Honors or Specialization in Environmental Earth Sciences. In the event an eligible student is not found in the Faculty of Science, a student meeting the same qualifications, entering fourth year Honors or Specialization in Environmental and Conservation Sciences in the Faculty of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences may be considered..
