Cascade CMS at the University of Alberta

News and Updates

Why Migrate to a New CMS?

The University of Alberta currently uses Sitecore as our Content Management System (CMS) for the websites of our faculties and units. Since initially selecting Sitecore as our CMS, the software has changed to focus on retail operations and corporations. As a result, Sitecore has become more expensive as its functionality increases. Most of that new functionality exceeds what the university community uses for its webpages.

An internal review of the existing CMS determined that switching to another vendor would likely lead to significant improvement in three areas:

  • lower cost
  • better functionality
  • more support from the product vendor

Proposed Migration Plan

Migration of all Sitecore websites must be completed before the existing Sitecore license expires in December 2020. To meet that deadline, the following actions will be taken:

  • Site migration will be like for like. This means that the existing site structure, design and content in Sitecore will be moved to Cascade without changes when the site migrates.
  • Site owners should make every effort to review their existing sites to remove unnecessary content prior to migration. Download the CMS Migration Preparation Guide for instructions.
  • University Relations will manage the migration with the aim to automate the process as much as possible.
  • Site owners will be responsible for validating content and making manual adjustments after the migration.

Updates will be posted here as the project moves forward. If you have questions, please contact Steve Kerr (, the project manager overseeing the migration initiative.
