Information for Selected Mitacs GRI Participants:

Congratulations! The internship coordinator is so excited, along with all of our team here at International Student + Visitor Services, to welcome you to the University of Alberta for your Mitacs GRI 2026 placement. We are grateful to play a part in facilitating your successful research internship stay with one of our many expert host professors, whom we thank for sharing their time and talents mentoring you.

We understand that you may have already been communicating with your U of A host professor directly by email through December and January. In mid-February, U of A received an intern list from Mitacs GRI, and that was the first time we had your names, contact information, and placement details regarding your project and faculty host. By late February, we had contacted all Mitacs GRI participants who appeared on that intern list, both the inbound international student researchers and their U of A host professors, so that everyone was on the same page at the same time.

Information included how the award letters from Mitacs are treated as invitation letters to be used for immigration purposes, as well as the resources and guidance available to all participants from U of A regarding immigration procedures, housing and accommodation options, an outline of campus registration actions taken care of by ISVS staff before and after your arrival, and settlement services offered support a successful stay, etc.

With dozens of talented students heading our way through this program, please be aware that it often takes us a few business days to reply back to any email inquiries. We aim to answer you as soon as possible, and do not wish to discourage you from reaching out, but rather set realistic expectations on when you may receive a response. Mitacs often has an automated reply to their emails stating that it may take up to 5 business days to receive a response from them as well, so we thank you in advance for your patience.

We look forward to welcoming you to Alberta soon!
