Reflecting on the Glow: The Legacy of Luminaria

For many years, Luminaria served as a beacon of light during the darkest nights of the year at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden. What began as a simple celebration of the winter solstice grew into a cherished tradition, centered around the thousands of hand-lit candles lining the pathways of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden.

From the sounds of a cappella singers echoing through the trees to the quiet moments of reflection on "Memory Lane," Luminaria was defined by its elemental spirit—celebrating candlelight, starlight, and the warmth of a shared fire.

A Time for Renewal

As the Garden continues to evolve, Luminaria has been decommissioned for the time being. After years of hosting thousands of guests, we are taking this time to pause and reflect on the future of our winter programming.

While we are not yet sure if Luminaria will return in its traditional form or evolve into an entirely new winter offering, our commitment to connecting people with nature remains unchanged. We are exploring new ways to share the beauty of the Garden during the snowy months, ensuring that whatever comes next captures the same serenity and magic our community has come to love.
