Code of Conduct

The Centre for Teaching and Learning values your participation in the Festival of Teaching and Learning. We look forward to everyone's collaboration in creating a safe and positive experience that supports connection building and learning. The Festival is a shared space for reflection, connection, and discovery across the teaching community.

Guided by the University of Alberta's shared values, this code of conduct outlines the expectations that support respectful, inclusive, and productive engagement throughout the Festival. All participants — including attendees, presenters, sponsors, students, volunteers, and Centre for Teaching and Learning staff — are expected to uphold the following:

  • Practice active respect: Treat all participants with dignity, care, and consideration, both in person and in digital spaces, including social media.
  • Engage with curiosity:  Approach discussions in ways that centre learning, asking questions that foster reflection and open-minded curiosity rather than conflict.
  • Share the stage: Contribute constructively to dialogues while making space for others to be heard and understood.
  • Own your impact: Be mindful of your words and actions. Critique ideas, not people. Take accountability in ways that are authentic to you if someone shares how they have been affected. 
  • Uphold community standards: Avoid behaviour that is disruptive, demeaning, or exclusionary.
  • Honour people's ideas: Do not record, screenshot, or share session materials without the presenter's or other participants' express permission.

University Policies and Related Standards

All Festival participants and sessions are expected to respect the university's Statement on Free Expression and other applicable policies, including the Discrimination and Harassment and Accommodation policies. 


Reporting Concerns

Participants who experience or witness behaviour that does not align with this code of conduct are encouraged to visit the Festival welcome desk (in person), private message the moderator (online), or email ctlevent@ualberta.ca.

Organizers may take appropriate steps to support a safe and positive Festival environment. Participants may also access the Office of Safe Disclosure and Human Rights, and other university services and support.
