Information for Instructors
Welcome to our page for instructors. Our goal is to help you help your students build the study and writing skills they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond. On this page, you can find information about our appointments and presentations. If you have a request or idea that is not mentioned on this page, reach out to us to see how we can help.
Our staff answer questions about and offer workshops on responsible AI use in the context of academic writing and study skills. Staff follow University of Alberta guidelines and any instructions on course materials. Reach out to us if you have any questions.
Class presentations and workshops
One of our staff members can visit your undergraduate or graduate class to share information about our services or present on a standard writing or learning topic.
We can:
- Deliver short class presentations about our services for 5 to 15 minutes.
- Deliver workshops on certain writing or learning topics in 30 to 90 minute sessions.

Extra credit and special projects
Some instructors require their students attend a writing or a learning appointment as part of an assignment or offer them extra credit for visiting. If you plan to offer extra credit for visiting, please contact us as early as possible so that we can arrange to support your students.
If your students request proof of attendance, we can provide it. If you are encouraging students in a particular class to attend, we can coordinate with you to provide confirmation so you know which students attended appointments.
Help your students make the most of their visit
All writers and learners can benefit from a second set of eyes. You can encourage your students to make the most of their appointment by:
- Encouraging them to book appointments in advance. Our schedule fills up very quickly.
- Asking them to visit us early in the writing process. We love to help with brainstorming and planning!
- Letting them know to come prepared with specific questions or areas of concern to provide a focus for the tutoring session.
- Sharing they may be able to book a drop-in appointment.
- Remembering that the service is not a fix-it shop. Peer tutors cannot edit or write students' papers for them, nor can they guarantee a good grade. Tutors will, however, teach effective writing principles so your students become better writers.
