ARAB 212 LEC B01: Intermediate Arabic II, Instructor: Iman Mersal

ARAB 212 develops proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic through integrated practice in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and translation. The course meets for five hours of instruction per week and combines lectures, discussions, and group activities. Students will complete Lessons 7–10 of Al-Kitaab fii Taʿallum al-ʿArabiyya, Part Two, supplemented by selected modern Arabic literary and cultural texts and an Arab film. Assignments include reading and discussion, short articles, and translation between English and Arabic. By the end of the course, students will communicate effectively about personal, intellectual, cultural, and social topics, using appropriate vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, and a range of grammatical structures.

Take ownership of your language skills in FREN 212 as you explore complex identities across the global Francophone community. This course utilizes task-based learning and blended learning to advance your advanced grammar, enrich your vocabulary, and deepen your cultural knowledge. Step past the basics and unlock a sophisticated, modern understanding of the French-speaking world.

FREN 254 A01: Introduction to Translation Theory and Practice: French-English-French, Instructor: Sathya Rao

According to linguists, between 25% and 50% of English words are of French origin. Yet, learning French is far from easy... FREN 254 explores the main differences between English and French through a variety of fun and interesting activities. This course will also help you acquire the basics for translating from English into French or French into English and using common translation tools instead of being used by them.

This course is taught in French.

This course counts toward the Certificate in International Learning and the MLCS Certificate in Translation Studies.

GERM 211 LEC A01: Intermediate German I, Instructor: Claudia Kost

German 211 is an exciting and challenging intermediate German language course. It is designed to further your skills beyond the beginner’s level, in communicating in written and spoken German, understanding written and oral texts, and responding to them with increasing accuracy, maturity, and fluency. We will cover topics such as holidays, art, music, and we will also read a short novel. This course follows a blended-learning model which is a combination of in-class, face-to-face instruction and interaction, and online self-paced, individual learning.

German 211 is intended for students who have completed German 112 (pre-requisite) or have comparable prior knowledge of German (completed Level A2 - CEFR).

This course counts toward the Certificate in International Learning.

GERM 212 LEC B01: Intermediate German II, Instructor: Claudia Kost

German 212 continues the instruction begun in GERM 211 and is designed to further your skills beyond the beginner’s level, in communicating in written and spoken German, understanding written and oral texts, and responding to them with increasing accuracy, maturity, and fluency. Basics of grammatical structures will be reviewed, and new grammatical and idiomatic concepts will be introduced. We will cover topics such as fairy tales, inventions, the divided Germany, and idioms and proverbs. We will also read a short novel. This course follows a blended-learning model which is a combination of in-class, face-to-face instruction and interaction, and online self-paced, individual learning.

German 212 is intended for students who have completed German 211 (pre-requisite) or have comparable prior knowledge of German (completed Level B1.1 - CEFR).

This course counts toward the Certificate in International Learning.

ITAL 211 LEC A01: Intermediate Italian I, Instructor: Patrizia Bettella

This course is for students with a previous elementary knowledge of Italian, who want to prefect the language and improve their communication skills and cultural knowledge in the Italian context. Students will expand communication skills in written and spoken Italian at an intermediate level. They will be able to understand written and oral texts and respond to them with more accuracy and fluency.

Take your Norwegian to the next level! NORW 211 builds on Beginners’ Norwegian, expanding your vocabulary while strengthening your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. We’ll explore topics such as sports and outdoor activities, entertainment and interests, everyday routines, climate and weather, seasons and holidays, and clothing and fashion. As your language skills develop, you’ll work with readings and listening materials that introduce more complex aspects of Norwegian culture, society, and everyday life.

NORW 211 is taught alongside Intermediate Swedish, creating a unique Scandinavian language-learning environment. You’ll focus primarily on Norwegian while also gaining some passive familiarity with Swedish and discovering how closely the two languages are related. In class, we’ll emphasize using Norwegian through conversations, pair and small-group activities, readings, listening practice, music, film, and cultural materials. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to build confidence while developing greater accuracy and a broader vocabulary.

The course uses Sett i gang I (3rd edition), together with its online resources. You’ll also read five short stories in Norwegian during the semester, giving you the opportunity to work with longer texts and use your growing language skills in new contexts. Online exercises and additional materials provide further practice as you become a more confident and independent user of Norwegian.

We’ll explore topics such as holidays and celebrations, family and relatives, appearance and personality, love and relationships, hometowns, and housing. As your language abilities develop, you’ll work with a wider range of readings and listening materials and explore increasingly complex aspects of Norwegian culture, society, and everyday life.

NORW 212 is taught alongside Intermediate Swedish, creating a unique Scandinavian language-learning environment. You’ll focus primarily on Norwegian while also gaining greater passive familiarity with Swedish and discovering more about the connections between the two languages. In class, we’ll emphasize using Norwegian through conversations, pair and small-group activities, readings, listening practice, music, film, and cultural materials. RUSS 211 LEC A01: Intermediate Russian I, Instructor: Elena Siemens

RUSS 211 offers an immersive continuation of Russian language study and meets three hours per week (Mon, Wed, Fri). Students strengthen core grammar, expand vocabulary, and develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through authentic materials such as news clips, songs, and films. The course places particular emphasis on listening comprehension and introduces students to Russian cultural contexts through discussions of history, music, cinema, art, current affairs, and television. RUSS 211 is a strong choice for students who want to build confidence and fluency in real‑world Russian.

Prerequisite: Russian 30 (or equivalent), or RUSS 112, or consent of Department.

RUSS 212 LEC B01: Intermediate Russian II, Instructor: Elena SIemens

RUSS 212 is a continuation of Intermediate RUSS 211 and meets three hours per week (Mon, Wed, Fri). The course reinforces foundational grammar while introducing more complex syntactic structures, expands vocabulary, and strengthens all language skills. Students work with authentic audiovisual materials and complete regular listening‑based assignments that support deeper cultural engagement. As fluency grows, students explore Russian literature, art, and contemporary social issues. RUSS 212 is ideal for learners ready to broaden both their linguistic abilities and their understanding of Russian cultural life.

SPAN 211 LEC A: Intermediate Spanish I, multiple sections; Instructors: Delma Wilson, Xavier Gutierrez, and Sandra Gaviria

This course is intended for students who already have a beginners’ level of proficiency in Spanish. As in the beginner-level courses, this class focuses on using Spanish in communicative situations that resemble real life. Students will continue developing their proficiency in the language by working on different skills and linguistic knowledge.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Understand somewhat complex oral and written texts on a variety of familiar topics, as well as simple texts on certain abstract topics
• Produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest
• Solve certain situations that may arise in an area where the language is spoken
• Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans
• Recognize and describe a range of cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world

SPAN 212 LEC B01-03: Intermediate Spanish II, multiple sections, Instructors: TBA

The objective of this course is to continue developing intermediate-level proficiency in Spanish. As in the beginner-level courses, this class focuses on using Spanish in communicative situations that resemble real life. Students will continue developing their proficiency in the language by working on different skills and linguistic knowledge.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Understand increasingly complex oral and written texts on a variety of familiar and abstract topics
• Produce somewhat complex connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest
• Solve a range of situations that may arise in an area where the language is spoken
• Describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and give somewhat complex reasons and explanations for opinions and plans
• Recognize certain features of geographical varieties of Spanish
• Recognize and describe a range of cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world

UKR 211 LEC A01: Intermediate Ukrainian I, Instructor: Oksana Butkovska

Ready to move beyond the basics? UKR 211 is designed for students who have completed UKR 112 or have an equivalent background, including students entering the University with Ukrainian 30 (or equivalent secondary-school preparation). Depending on their proficiency, some students may also wish to consider our advanced 300-level Ukrainian language courses. In UKR 211, students build on the foundations developed in UKR 111–112, expanding their vocabulary and strengthening their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through contemporary topics, authentic communication, meaningful cultural exploration, and contemporary topics from Ukraine and around the world.

Our approach: The course combines interactive classroom and self-study learning modules developed specifically for intermediate learners of Ukrainian. Through discussions, collaborative tasks, authentic videos, podcasts, news, and other contemporary media, students strengthen their language proficiency while exploring Ukraine, the global Ukrainian community, and current international issues through the medium of Ukrainian.

Through engaging themes related to contemporary Ukraine, culture, society, travel, media, and current global issues, students refine their ability to express opinions, discuss ideas, narrate experiences, and participate in extended conversations while continuing to strengthen reading and writing skills.

Our approach: Students continue learning through interactive classroom activities and online modules that emphasize meaningful communication.
