The Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies (MLCS), through the Student Awards Office of the University of Alberta, annually awards approximately $35,150.00 in Book Prizes and Undergraduate Scholarships to students for excellent performance in courses taught within the department.

Roland Bonvalet Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to a student with superior academic standing enrolled in any year of a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated excellence in a senior-level French coursework. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide some financial assistance to students wanting to attend a spring or summer or year program of language study in a French-speaking environment.
Endowed by Dr N Mallet, in memory of her late husband Dr Roland Bonvalet, former member of the Department of Romance Languages, and friends.
Domecki Family Prize in Polish Studies
Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement in either first or second year Polish language. Recipient will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

Mrs Kathe & Mr Siegfried Klotsche Scholarship in German
Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement enrolled in any year or convocating with a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated excellence in German coursework. Preference given to a student with demonstrated volunteerism in Edmonton's German community or volunteerism in social and/or community-based organizations.

Anna and Wasyl Pylypiuk Memorial Prize
Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement enrolled in any year of an undergraduate or graduate degree at the University of Alberta. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated excellence in any senior-level Ukrainian coursework.

The Gowrah Ramlugon Memorial Award
Awarded to a student with satisfactory academic standing enrolled in the third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated excellence in French coursework.
Asvina Bissonauth in memory of her grandmother, Gowrah Ramlugon, who passed away in Mauritius on June 22, 2006. Gowrah's first languages were Creole and Hindi but loved and valued the French and English languages.
Marian Campbell Memorial Prize
Awarded to a student with superior academic standing enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated excellence in Scandinavian coursework through achieving the highest average in a course.

Catherine Folinsbee Memorial Scholarship
Awarded to students with superior academic achievement enrolled in third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Cultural Studies. Selection based on academic standing. Preference given to students with a demonstrated interest in attending a program of formal language of study in an environment where one of the languages offered by the Department is the official language.

Aleksander Matejko Memorial Prize
Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta. Selection based on academic standing and demonstrated excellence in Polish coursework including history, sociology, language, and/or culture of Poland. Preference given to a student with financial need.

Vera Gordey Smith Memorial Prize
