Defense Title: Artificial Neural Networks and Music Cognition

Researchers often use artificial intelligence to model cognition. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) provide one important example of such research. However, researchers rarely examine the structure of trained networks. But interpreting ANN structure can reveal new representations relevant to cognitive science. Thus, researchers must interpret ANNs to create new theories. The current thesis explores how interpreting ANNs can inform formal music theory and musical cognition.
