Andie Govender, Master of Public Health graduate and Dean's Gold Medal award recipient.
What drew you to this area of study?
I was drawn to the master of public health program because of my interest in the One Health framework, which recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health in shaping population health outcomes.
How did you stay motivated when things got tough?
Spending time outside and spending time with my friends. There are some things only a sweet treat with friends can fix!
What advice would you give to a student considering your area of study?
Build your network early and don’t be afraid to reach out! This degree is what you make of it and who you surround yourself with makes all the difference in your work and learning about yourself.
What’s next for you in your career and/or academic journey? What do you hope to accomplish?
Right now, I am working as an apiculture technician with the Technology Transfer Program, where I am contributing to applied honeybee health research through field and laboratory-based work. In the next stage of my career, I hope to continue building hands-on experience in environmental and population health research, particularly in areas that connect with ecological systems with human health outcomes.
