Graduate Embedded Certificates

 

Graduate embedded certificates are programs available to students studying at the University of Alberta. They provide a unique opportunity for students to earn a second credential concurrently with their degree program.

Upon completion, you will have both a graduate degree and a graduate embedded certificate(s) under your belt.

A GEC is a for-credit program that requires students to complete at least 12 credits of study to obtain a second credential. Some students may be able to use degree electives towards a GEC, while others may need to complete more than the minimum degree requirements to qualify for both the degree and the certificate. A GEC must be completed concurrently with a graduate degree. Requirements for both must be completed prior to graduation. (Note: A student cannot convocate and then complete the GEC requirements.)

Holding a graduate embedded certificate makes it clear to prospective employers that you have additional specialized training in addition to the knowledge and skills gained through your graduate degree program. If you are interested in employment related to a specific GEC, you may have a competitive advantage.

If you plan to seek entrance into a PhD program conducting research related to the focus of specific GEC, this additional specialized training may be useful.

Students wishing to enroll in a GEC program must be enrolled in a graduate program available at the School or another faculty at the University of Alberta, and be in good academic standing when they apply.

Coursework required for a graduate embedded certificate must be completed by the time degree requirements have been completed.

Graduate embedded certificates are awarded to students at the time their degree is awarded. Students receive a parchment for the degree and a parchment for the certificate. Both are shown on the student’s transcript.
