Master of Science

The minimum requirement for an MSc is six credit hours of graduate level coursework; however, additional courses may be required, depending on the area of specialization, the undergraduate background of the student and recommendation of the supervisor or supervisory committee. Students must also complete and successfully defend a thesis. The minimum period of residence is two four-month terms of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

The time required to complete the MSc will vary with the individual candidate; however, a minimum of two years is normally required.

Doctor of Philosophy

The minimum requirement for a PhD is 12 credit hours of graduate-level coursework. The department may approve a reduction to six credit hours of graduate-level coursework for students entering the PhD program after completing a previous graduate degree. Departmental approval of the reduction will depend on the student's background and a recommendation from the supervisor and supervisory committee. Students must pass a candidacy exam and successfully prepare and defend a thesis on an approved research topic. The minimum period of residence is two academic years of full-time attendance at the University of Alberta.

The time required to complete the PhD will vary according to the previous training of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken; however, a minimum of two years is required.
