U of A Department of Drama - 20 January 2012

Tristan (Tian) Mi, a fourth-year student in the Department of Drama's BFA Acting program and a lifelong performer, died suddenly and unexpectedly on January 19. He was 22.

Born and raised in the People's Republic of China, where he began performing at the age of eight, Tristan moved to Edmonton in 2008 and was accepted into the BFA Acting program at the University of Alberta at the age of 19. As an Acting student in his final year of study, Tristan was part of a cohort of 12 students performing in U of A Studio Theatre's Season 2011/12 productions. Tristan made his debut on the Studio Theatre stage last November as Frank the innkeeper in David Greig's Yellow Moon and was in rehearsals for William Shakespeare's Cymbeline, where he was to play a leading role.

The students, staff, instructors and faculty members of the Department of Drama feel a profound sense of loss and mourn the passing of a talented and vibrant young man who contributed greatly to our close-knit creative and academic community. Tristan had a great passion for his craft as an actor and singer and was excited to be fulfilling his dream of performing before large audiences. We are thankful for the time he spent with us and convey our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. The University Banner on the roof of the Administration Building is presently at half mast in memory of Tristan.

A memorial service in honour of Tristan Mi will be held on Thursday, January 26 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. in the Wild Rose Room (second floor) at Lister Conference Centre on North Campus. All in the community are welcome to attend.
