About the Department
The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is made up of the following divisions and training programs. We provide five residency training programs, seven MD fellowship programs, four clinical PhD fellowship programs, a graduate studies program that also includes, a pathologists' assistant program and an undergraduate program.
We're affiliated with the Royal Alexandra, Misericordia and Grey Nuns Hospitals, and the Cross Cancer Institute.

Clinical Service
We work with patients and doctors throughout the Edmonton region and northern Alberta. Through Alberta Health Services, and in partnership with DynaLIFE DX Diagnostic Laboratories, we provide clinical laboratory services in Anatomical Pathology, Hematology & Transfusion Medicine, Histocompatability, Medical Biochemistry, and Medical Microbiology.
Education
We offer a BSc Medical Laboratory Sciences program, MSc and PhD thesis-based research programs, and a course/practicum-based MSc Pathologists' Assistant Program. We have research-based post-doctoral fellow training and four accredited clinical post-doctoral fellowship programs: Clinical biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics, and Medical Genetics. We have four Royal College-approved residency training programs: General Pathology, Anatomical Pathology, Forensic Pathology and Hematological Pathology.
We play a major role in undergraduate, medical and dental education, as well as teaching in Pharmacy, Nursing, Rehabilitation Medicine and basic science undergraduate programs. We offer both undergraduate and graduate courses.
Research
Our major areas of research include analytical and environmental toxicology, transplantation and immunology, diagnostic and applied microbiology, molecular mechanisms in cancer and lymphoproliferative disorders, cryobiology and tissue preservation. Faculty and clinical faculty are partners in clinical research, and we collaborate on research projects with the Departments of Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Public Health Sciences, and Anthropology.
Location
Our clinical laboratories are on multiple levels at the south end of the Walter Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre. The Division of Medical Laboratory Sciences is in the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy, with student labs in the basement of the Clinical Sciences Building. We have research space within the clinical laboratory area and in several other facilities: the Clinical Sciences Building, Medical Sciences Building, Heritage Medical Research Building, Canadian Blood Services, and Cross Cancer Institute.
