Communiqué: death of Laurent Godbout, professor emeritus

Communiqué from the Dean of the Faculté Saint-Jean following the death of Laurent Godbout, professor emeritus at Faculté Saint-Jean

15 March 2023

Dear Members of the Community,

I am saddened to announce the passing of Laurent Godbout, Professor Emeritus at the Faculté Saint-Jean of the University of Alberta.

Many of you will have known him, some of you for a very long time - he was active on campus for almost 34 years as a professor, researcher and administrator (he was our first vice-dean), and was a regular sight in our halls until recently.

Having only known him for a short time, during my conversation with him I was touched by his kindness, his great knowledge of the Western Canadian francophonie, and his passion for Saint-Jean and for theater. With his passing, an entire part of our history is lost - but his great generosity and unconditional support for the Campus - the cornerstone of our success - and his contributions will never fade.

The entire Franco-Albertan community is grieving this news - a book of condolences will be available at the Reception for those who wish to pay their respects.

On behalf of the entire Campus Saint-Jean community, all the alumni who knew him, and all his former colleagues, I would like to express my gratitude to Laurent, and offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Jason Carey,
Dean, Faculté Saint-Jean
