Be diligent and prepared in the face of COVID-19 increases

We are seeing significant increases in the number of COVID-19 cases in communities across our province — and our campuses are no exception. Last week, 24 U of A community members who had each been on campus in recent weeks were among the new cases in Alberta. Many more U of A community members are also currently affected by COVID-19, proactively self-isolating as close contacts or caring for those who are or at risk of becoming ill.

Each one of us has the potential to be exposed to COVID-19. We must continue to diligently follow the precautionary measures provided by our health and safety experts to minimize our individual and community risks. Routinely complete all fit-for-work assessments and other safety protocols such as hand washing, wearing masks and physical distancing every time. And, be prepared both professionally and personally to take the time you need should you be more directly affected by COVID-19.

Safety measures and enforcement during COVID-19

As part of the provincial state of public health emergency, the Government of Alberta has granted certain peace officers temporary authority to enforce public health orders — this includes our team of University of Alberta Protective Services officers. If you do not follow mandatory restrictions as outlined in public health orders, you could be subject to a $1,000 fine and up to $100,000 through the courts. Existing U of A campus safety disciplinary policies can also apply if failing to comply with COVID-19 campus safety protocols.

Mask use and best practices FAQ

Make mandatory mask wearing more comfortable and ensure you are properly protected at the same time. Our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) experts have answered your most frequently asked questions regarding mask use and best practices. The HSE team provides workplace health and safety guidance for the U of A community. See their latest guidance on the use of face masks, and other public health workplace safety protocols during COVID-19.

Important reminders for international students coming to Canada

International students planning to travel to Canada need to book their Isolation Accommodation Program or confirm their Off-Campus Quarantine Plan before December 17. Both programs enable students to meet Canada’s mandatory 14 day quarantine requirement for international travellers. The programs will remain open to support students arriving and quarantining during the University winter closure (December 25 - January 3). Students are required to register prior to December 17 to ensure we are ready for your arrival.
