Neonatal Resuscitation: From Discovery to Delivery Room Impact

Join Dr. Georg Schmölzer for an inside look at groundbreaking neonatal resuscitation research—work that directly impacts one of the most vulnerable patient groups: newborns. Discover how innovations in resuscitation techniques developed at the U of A are shaping international guidelines and transforming training for future clinicians. We’ll explore the global challenge of newborn survival and the path from laboratory discovery to delivery room application. This session offers an inspiring, behind-the-scenes view of science in action—changing the way newborns are cared for across the globe.

 

Speaker

Professor Georg Schmölzer is the Director of the Centre for the Studies of Asphyxia and Resuscitation (CSAR) at the University of Alberta. He is a clinician-scientist and practicing neonatologist with the Northern Alberta Neonatal Program. His research focuses on understanding the physiological changes that occur during the transition from fetal to neonatal life, as well as during infant and pediatric resuscitation. Through this work, he aims to improve both short- and long-term outcomes for newborns, infants, and children.
Dr. Schmölzer obtained his MD in Graz, Austria and trained in Pediatrics and Neonatology in Austria and Australia. He obtained his PhD at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia and a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Alberta. He is currently a Professor of Pediatrics and an Adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta. He received the King Charles III Coronation Medal by the Canadian Lung Association for this work to improve lung health in preterm infants and was nominated by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada for his work on neonatal cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
