Arts Mentorship Program Information

Starting University can be hard, especially if you’re starting it alone. We invite all new U of A Faculty of Arts students to apply to become a mentee and be paired with a mentor to help ease their transition into our campus community.

Mentor volunteers are upper-year Arts students with a passion for helping others and building community! Mentors and up to 5 mentees are grouped for the Fall and Winter Terms of a single academic year, and gain access to monthly mentorship program events and meetups, new opportunities and consistent Arts Undergraduate Student Services team support.

Arts Mentees

Your Faculty of Arts Undergraduate Student Services team and our team of 20 incredible upper-year student mentor volunteers are excited to meet you soon! This is an amazing opportunity for new Arts students who are interested in being mentored by an upper-year student as they transition into university life, and we'll do our best to match applicants with mentors who share their program of study, interests, and identities. Please note that up to 5 students may be paired with one mentor for the year.

Mentee Benefits

1. Gain one-on-one and small group mentorship from an experienced upper-year mentor volunteer.
2. Meet and spend time with other students from the Faculty of Arts outside of the classroom.
3. Get peer support as you begin your Arts student experience here at the University of Alberta.

Mentee Expectations

1. Keep in touch with your mentor throughout the year! Staying in contact will make all the difference in your experience, and they're here to make your experience great.
2. Complete a very short and mandatory online orientation process to get started.
3. Mentees must maintain respectful, appropriate, and well-mannered relationships with their mentors at all times and act in accordance with the University's Student Conduct Policy.

Arts Mentors

We're looking to create a group of 20 upper-year student mentors from a diversity of academic programs, personal interests, identities, and more to make up our Arts Student Mentorship Program! Be the mentor that you needed when you started your University of Alberta journey while getting involved on campus!

Mentor Benefits

1. Receive a unique University of Alberta reference letter for their time invested and training received.
2. Gain access to on-campus professional development and events.
3. Meet and spend time with other students from the Faculty of Arts outside of the classroom.
4. Make a meaningful difference in the lives of incoming University of Alberta Arts students, and be a part of building a welcoming and encouraging campus community.

Mentor Expectations

1. Volunteer a minimum of 5 hours per month from September and May
   • Includes conversations and meet-ups with mentees, attending community events, attending meetings, and professional development progress and more.
2. Be proactive about keeping in touch with your mentees!
   • Reach out often and find opportunities to connect, your active engagement with mentees will make all the difference in their experience.
3. Attend Mentorship Program events, drop-in sessions, and meetings, including mandatory orientation and training.
4. Track your hours honestly and consistently. Mentors are responsible for self-managing in this regard.
5. Mentors must maintain respectful, appropriate, and well-mannered relationships with their mentees at all times and in accordance with the Student Conduct Policy.
