The Centre collégial de l'Alberta (CCA), the college arm of the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean, announces the launch of its Health Care Aide program.
The result of extensive preparatory work, this program combines theory and practice, enabling students in the program to acquire the skills, knowledge, and abilities required to provide healthcare in a variety of settings. The CCA is the only post-secondary institution offering the program in French.
Now open for enrolment ahead of its launch in September 2018, theHealth Care Aide program is open to recent high school graduates as well as those wishing to change careers to become part of a team of healthcare professionals. Students will have the opportunity to gain a fundamental understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and the development of the different stages of the life cycle.
As part of the program, students will also:
- learn to provide basic care for service users
- learn to implement care and service plans
- learn provincial legislation and policies
- undertake a 5-week work placement before entering the labour market
In Alberta, health care aides mainly work in:
- hospitals
- care homes
- home care agencies
- short- and long-term care facilities
The program generally lasts 8 months – 24 credits are required to complete it and receive a certificate. The program consists of seven modules (198.5 hours of theory and 86.5 hours of laboratory work) and two work placements (each lasting 200 hours, i.e. 40 hours per week for 5 weeks). The number of full-time students admitted to each cohort of this programme is limited to 8.
This course acts as a pathway into the nursing assistant program.
