2 October 2026
Professor Laurent Cammarata of the University of Alberta's Faculté Saint-Jean
The research community at Faculté Saint-Jean, the Franchophone faculty of the University of Alberta, is celebrating Professor Laurent Cammarata’s receipt of the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Minnesota. Awarded to a very select group of graduates from among more than 79,000 alumni, this prestigious award recognizes his exceptional leadership, community engagement, and the lasting impact of his work. It is the culmination of a career dedicated to transforming pedagogical practices in immersion and second-language instruction.
Having received numerous honors throughout his career—including the ACTFL-MLJ Paul Pimsleur Award, the Stephen A. Freeman Award, the Alberta Teachers’ Association Educational Research Award, and the Judy Gibson Award of Excellence— Dr. Cammarata has established himself as a leading figure in French immersion research, particularly for his work on the pedagogical integration of language and literacy across various academic subjects, as well as on the professional knowledge of teachers and teacher educators in immersion and Francophone minority education contexts. He is also interested in fostering language awareness among teaching staff and in issues related to student retention—challenges deeply rooted in classroom realities. By bridging the gap between research and on-the-ground realities, he provides educators with planning models and instructional tools essential to student success.
Beyond his publications and reference works with international publishers such as Routledge and John Benjamins, Dr. Cammarata’s influence extends globally. Whether as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Immersion and Content-Based Language Education, as an international speaker, or as a trainer for teaching staff across Canada and the United States—notably through the summer institutes of the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota, where he taught for nearly two decades— his expertise is shaping the future of bilingual education. This honorary distinction from the University of Minnesota attests to the scope of his contributions and the influence he brings to the Faculté Saint-Jean, the University of Alberta, and the entire Francophone community.
