Truth: The Only Path to True Reconciliation
Jason Carey - 29 September 2026
On National Truth and Reconciliation Day, the Campus Saint-Jean community is taking a much-needed moment to reflect, listen, and recommit.
At Campus Saint-Jean, we are pursuing an ambitious inclusivity initiative, guided by the conviction that our institution must be a safe, welcoming, and just space for every member of our wonderful community. However, there can be no lasting reconciliation without first going through the fundamental step of truth.
Facing the truth head-on requires courage. It compels us to acknowledge uncomfortable historical and contemporary realities—and sometimes to make difficult institutional choices. We cannot—and must not—view our past solely with nostalgia or through rose-colored glasses. Honoring the truth means accepting to examine our shadows with clarity so that we may better make amends where necessary. It means providing a space for and by Indigenous people on campus, such as our Indigenous Room.
Today, we firmly renew our commitment to continue and intensify our efforts toward truth and reconciliation. This journey is not undertaken in isolation: we move forward hand in hand with all partners who share these values of justice and respect. Only by walking together on this demanding path can we build a truly reconciled future.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our community partners. A special thank you goes to the Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, whose wisdom, guidance, and invaluable support guide and direct us daily on this journey. My heartfelt thanks to Angelina Yellowbird, who guides us every day on this journey. A big thank you to all the members of our community who are journeying with us.
Together, let us continue this essential work with humility, determination, and hope.
