A Historic Start to the School Year at Campus Saint-Jean: An Unprecedented Surge in Francophone Enrollment in Alberta

As the leaves begin to turn golden, a special sense of excitement fills the halls of Campus Saint-Jean, the University of Alberta’s Francophone campus. Whether in Edmonton, at the Calgary campus, or online, the start of the 2026 academic year marks a decisive turning point for the university and for the entire French-speaking community.

This year, nearly 1,500 students from all programs and grade levels are enrolling at the institution or logging in for online courses. This is the highest enrollment figure ever recorded in the institution’s history. This remarkable increase is driven by strong local, regional, and national demand: the vast majority of the student body holds Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status, while international students remain in the minority. These figures confirm the growing interest among local families in a French-language university education.

As the largest French-language postsecondary institution in Alberta, Campus Saint-Jean has a draw that now extends well beyond Western and Northwestern Canada. With a comprehensive range of programs—from college diplomas to bachelor’s degrees, interdisciplinary master’s degrees, and doctorates—the campus directly addresses the growing need for French-language education in all communities at the provincial, national, and international levels.

This momentum is growing elsewhere as part of the provincial targeted enrollment expansion program. Thanks to this support from the Government of Alberta, announced on September 11, the Centre collégial de l’Alberta will see its enrollment capacity increased in key sectors experiencing high demand, particularly for the early childhood education program and the healthcare attendant program, thereby directly addressing the urgent need for skilled workers in Francophone communities.

Financially, Campus Saint-Jean has reached a historic milestone by posting a balanced operating budget for the very first time. This achievement is primarily due to successful internal reorganizations, steady enrollment growth, the expansion of doctoral programs, and the development of cutting-edge research befitting a university ranked among the top 100 in the world. This historic balance ensures the campus’s long-term viability and establishes a solid, sustainable foundation upon which future major projects will be built. The renewed commitment and financial support from the federal and provincial governments reinforce these efforts and bolster the institution’s autonomy. Building on this momentum, the institution expects to sign even more strategic partnerships over the course of the year. 

On the ground, the campus’s modernization is taking very tangible form. The major renovations currently underway on the second floor, as well as the overhaul of the gymnasium, are part of this transformation of the campus environment, bringing a modern touch befitting an internationally renowned postsecondary institution. By investing in its infrastructure, Campus Saint-Jean now offers its community an attractive and stimulating learning environment, tailored to the needs of a diverse French-speaking population—including students from French-language and immersion school systems, as well as newcomers.

Alongside these physical construction projects, work is continuing to integrate and highlight the history of Alberta’s Francophone community at the very heart of the campus’s educational framework. This commemorative and educational initiative will culminate in several major unveilings scheduled for 2027, a pivotal year that will mark the 50th anniversary of the Faculté Saint-Jean.

“Achieving this balanced budget gives us the freedom to act,” says Professor Jason Carey, Dean and Executive officer of Campus Saint-Jean. “It validates our management and gives us the means to achieve our ambitions: to build on our achievements and roll out new programs and investments to meet the needs of Francophone communities.”

This momentum will gain new impetus starting in January 2027, with the official presentation of Campus Saint-Jean’s strategic plan for the period 2027–2034. This roadmap will set the broad scientific, educational, and community priorities for the next eight years. 

Building on this financial stability, its renovated facilities, and an enrollment level unprecedented in the region, Campus Saint-Jean is preparing to expand its academic offerings, particularly in Calgary and online. Never before has Western Canada been able to count on such a vital, ambitious, and influential French-language postsecondary institution—one that is more ready than ever to shape the future and train the French-speaking leaders of tomorrow.
