Stewart MacLennan

Stewart MacLennan, PhD, NP, is a Teaching Professor and Director of Quality Assurance (QA) in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta, and a Nurse Practitioner with Alberta Health Services Correctional Healthcare. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor with the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre. Stewart’s scholarship sits at the intersection of correctional healthcare, relational ethics, and clinician formation. His work examines subjective experiences of pain and embodied distress among people who are incarcerated, the ethics of care in complex correctional practice contexts, and how therapeutic relationships are built in settings shaped by mistrust. More recently, he has expanded his program of inquiry to professional identity formation among correctional nurses and other health professionals, with particular attention to writing as an epistemic practice and a mode of inquiry that supports reflection, self revision, and identity (re)formation over time.
