French Placement Test Procedures

Once registered for the French Placement test, it will be accessible on your eClass account.

• To log into Canvas please use your CCID and password
• Complete both the grammar component and the comprehension questions related to the video
• Keep in mind that once you have started, you have one hour to complete each component of the test and that accent marks must be used when required. Failure to finish the test within one hour or to use accents will invalidate your test score

Once you have completed the tests, please consult the placement chart on Canvas to determine your placement and/or email frentest@ualberta.ca if you need advice regarding placement.

Note the Following

• Students with French 30 will NOT receive credits below FREN 211
• French 30 is not required to place in FREN 211 or above
• Students with some immersion and/or with IB French should talk to the coordinator to confirm placement
• Native speakers or French immersion students (k-12) typically go directly into our French content classes (FREN 254 or FREN 301+)
• Students who have completed FREN 212, or who have completed FREN 300 (formerly FREN 297), or who place above FREN 300, are eligible to take FREN 254 Introduction to Translation Theory and Practice: French-English-French, as FREN 212 is the prerequisite
