Environmental Management

This element of the Engineering Health and Safety Program reflects on protecting the environment.

It is the primary responsibility of all individuals working in a Faculty of Engineering space to conduct research in an environmentally responsible way. For researchers this means.

Environmental Release

All laboratories are required to report any environmental releases to the department of Environment, Health and Safety through the online incident reporting portal . In case of spills, it is important to control the spill and prevent any release into the environment. Proper waste management and chemical storage along with good housekeeping prevents unnecessary spills.

If your lab experiences an environmental release or a big spill please contact the control centre and ask for the EHS on-call.

Waste Management

All contaminated waste must be properly collected, labeled, stored, and disposed. EHS provides a free of cost hazardous waste management solution through the CHEMATIX online tool. For detailed information on waste management, refer to the engineering waste management guidelines .

For work with dangerous and high risk substances, please contact EHS or the Faculty Safety Advisor to discuss permitting requirements and facility standards. Some examples are:

  • Regulated substances
  • Biological contaminates
  • High risk and regulated chemicals
  • Asbestos
  • Mercury
  • Lead
  • Radioactive material
  • Lasers (class 3B or 4)
