GFC Nominee to the Board of Governors

Call for Academic Staff Nominations

Applications will be accepted until Thursday, May 28, 2020 at 12:00 PM (Noon)

In accordance to the  PSLA [Section 16(3)], two members of the academic staff of the University of Alberta serve on the Board of Governors, one of whom is nominated by General Faculties Council (GFC) and one of whom is nominated by the Academic Staff Association (AASUA).

As of July 1, 2020, there will be a vacancy on the Board of Governors calling for one academic staff representative to be nominated by General Faculties Council (GFC). This position is currently held by Professor Katherine Binhammer (Faculty of Arts).  General Faculties Council (GFC) is called upon to commence a nomination/election process to fill this upcoming vacancy on the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta.


Selection Criteria - Academic Staff Member

Regulations stipulate that:
  • The GFC-nominated academic staff member who serves on the Board of Governors must come from U of A Staff Category (A1.0)
  • Nominee must be employed in Category A1.0 throughout the term of appointment to the Board and, in addition, must be willing and able to serve for the full term of the appointment on a continuous basis. A full term on the Board is normally three years.
  • Staff who are on leave* are NOT eligible to serve as academic staff representatives on the Board of GovernorsThe term ‘leave’ includes: administrative leave, sabbatical, political, medical, parental, childbirth, disability, assisted, secondment.

Nomination and Election Process

Applications will be accepted until Thursday, May 28, 2020 at 12:00 PM (Noon)

The following steps are required to complete an application:

  1. Nominee must accept nomination and agree to stand for election. If multiple names come forward an election is held to declare candidate.
  2. Nominee Application Forman online registration can be completed and submitted by the Nominee or a Nominator (on behalf of Nominee). Please Note: application requires an expression of interest (approximately 150 words) and a brief professional/bio sketch (approximately 150 words)
  3. Nominee must be supported by five (5) academic staff members from staff category A1.0 (continuing full-time and/or part-time academic staff) not including the Nominee.
  4. Each Nominator is required to complete and submit an online "Nominator Support and Consent Form" prior to the application deadline.

APPLY NOW! The completed application consists of the Nominee Application Form (online registration) AND an online Nominator Support and Consent Form submitted by each of the five (5) supporting Nominators by Thursday, May 28, 2020 at 12:00 pm (Noon).
