Steadward Centre's Free2BMe Exploring Physical Literacy Project RBC Learn to Play

RBC Jersey Day

From coast to coast during the week of November 22 to 29, Canadians will take part in the celebration and power of sport, from grassroots to high-performance. The Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation's Steadward Centre, an internationally-acclaimed disability research Centre supporting the sport and fitness goals of people experiencing disability with effective, research based, sport, physical activity and athlete development, will host a week of events for Sport Day and Jersey Day.

The Steadward Centre's involvement in this year's RBC Sport and Jersey Day will usher in the roll out of a new program called Free2BeMe Exploring Physical Literacy project. Funded by the RBC Learn to Play Project, a partnership between RBC, ParticipACTION and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), The Steadward Centre received 1 of 186 grants awarded throughout Canada.

RBC understands that children need to learn basic skills of being active in order to develop confidence and competence to participate in sport and physical activity and through these grants, RBC can support organizations like The Steadward Centre to deliver quality sport and recreation programming.

Through weekly one-on-one motor skill development sessions, adapted fitness, instructional group programs and school programming, Free2BMe will serve over 400 kids and teens ages 4 to 19 years experiencing a range of disabilities. The aim of the Free2BMe program is to provide opportunities for kids and teens of all ability levels to engage in physical activity and fitness programs toward the development of physical literacy, sport, positive social skills and overall health and well-being in an instructional environment.
