Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation Professor Nicholas L. Holt has recently published a book focused on the role of sport in positive youth development. Positive Youth Development Through Sport (second edition) covers a range of disciplines including sport psychology, development psychology, physical education, sport development and sport sociology.

"This book is about how we can use sport to build strengths and promote positive outcomes for children and adolescents," says Dr. Holt. "It also contains information about how to create environments that are conducive to promoting life skills" For example, it outlines ways of teaching kids skills in sport - such as teamwork - that will transfer into other areas of their lives.

A true inter-disciplinary publication, Positive Youth Development Through Sport features high-profile contributors from Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the US. The book's three main sections focus on the following:

  • the theoretical and historical contexts of PYD
  • quantitative and qualitative methods for assessing PYD in sport
  • the potential for PYD in sport across different types of sporting contexts

With the second edition providing more in-depth guidance on how to apply positive youth development in practice, Positive Development Through Sport is a must-read for students and researchers in PYD research, as well as educators, practitioners and policy makers interested in youth sport.
