The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation is saddened by the passing of Professor Emeritus Dr. Richard Alderman. Dr. Alderman's family announced that the former professor of Physical Education and Sport Studies (1965-1993) passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at the age of 87.

**Excerpt from obituary**

Born in Calgary on December 9, 1931, to his parents Robert Thomas Alderman and Florence Annie Chamberlain, Dr. Richard (Rikk) Alderman also had two older sisters, Freda and Elsie. He eventually went to the University of British Columbia to gain his Bachelor of Physical Education, 1956. In 1961 he completed his Masters of Physical Education at UBC, and then a Doctorate of Education at the University of California Berkeley in 1963. In the spring of 1960, Rikk met Dorothy Sullivan, and they were married on February 16, 1961 in Switzerland. After Berkeley, Dorothy and Rikk moved to Los Angeles, where he was an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California. After two years at USC, Dorothy and Rikk decided to relocate to Edmonton, and Rikk joined the University of Alberta as a Professor of Sport Psychology in the department of Sport Studies. Over the next 28 years he worked with high performance athletes, wrote several books, and was published extensively in scientific journals on the psychological aspects of athletic performance. An excellent athlete and avid sports fan, Rikk's greatest passion was golf. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, daughter Sarah (Terry Langley), grandchildren Rachel and Jacob, son Jason, grandchildren Jack and Naomi. In lieu of flowers or gift, donations can be made to The Humane Society of Edmonton and KidSport, Alberta chapter.
