Faculty Recognition

Margie Davenport developed a new CSEP specialization on exercise during pregnancy. The evidence-informed content of the Specialization will support Qualified Exercise Professionals to actively encourage a physically active lifestyle in their clients prior to conception, throughout pregnancy, and into the postpartum period. Recognizing that exercise prescription in the postpartum period is distinct from both pregnancy and the general non-pregnant population, the CSEP Pre & Postnatal Exercise Specialization™ online course and comprehensive manual will guide the Qualified Exercise Professional through tailored recommendations specific to this population.

Craig Steinback was a panelist for an online Webinar for the Physiological Society titled Assessment of the Arterial Baroreflex: A Sympathetic Response to Pregnancy and High Altitude?

Shintaro Kono will be a panelist on a webinar entitled “The future of leisure studies: Early Career Researcher Perspectives"

Student Recognition

Lauren Ray received the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship recognizes outstanding academic achievement of students pursuing graduate studies in Alberta.

Shannon Pynn received the Martha Piper Award - The Martha Piper Awards were established in 1997 to commemorate the significant contribution Dr. Martha Piper made to the research community at the University of Alberta. The purpose of these awards is to recognize research communication excellence at the graduate level. Only research communication activities undertaken during a graduate student's current academic program (as a graduate student of the University of Alberta) will be considered.

Stephanie Ntoukas is a recipient of GSA's Research Assistant Award would have demonstrated excellence in their contribution to research, leadership in innovation and versatility within research, and would have greatly contributed to the UofA's research community.

PhD Students Shannon Pynn and Kurtis Pankow will host conferences as part of mental health initiatives for the Fort McMurray Saints football team.

Congratulations to the 2020 Alumni Awards Winners. Originally announced in Fall 2020, were recently celebrated on February 24. Here is a video honouring two outstanding KSR grads - Art Quinney '74 PhD & former Dean and David Legg '00 PhD.

David Legg, ’00 PhD : For more than 20 years, Legg has been creating sport opportunities for people living with a disability and ensuring the joy of sport is increasingly available to all Canadians.

H.A. (Art) Quinney, ’74 PhD : With almost five decades at the U of A, Quinney is a tireless advocate for wellness whose leadership on key initiatives helped make Alberta a physical activity leader.


Sports Wall of Fame Video - Alumni Awards

Shandra Doran, ’97 BSc(Spec), ’05 PhD : Doran helped the Pandas volleyball team win four back-to-back national championships in the 1990s. Now an emergency doctor, she still comes to campus to offer medical advice to current Pandas players.

Heidi Coleman, ’05 BA, ’09 BEd : A star wrestler for the Pandas from 2000 to 2005, Coleman became a five-time Canada West medallist and went on to assistant coach for the Pandas while she earned an education degree.

Daniel G. Syrotuik, ’75 MSc, ’84 PhD : With a 40-year career, Syrotuik boosted football in Alberta and across Canada. As an assistant coach for the Golden Bears, he helped lead the team to three Canada West championships, two Vanier Cup appearances and one national title.

Pandas Hockey Team, ’01-’07 (TBC) : This Pandas women hockey team won five titles in six years, making history with three consecutive national championships. Today, they are lawyers, business women, professors, coaches, Olympic gold medallists and more.
