Julian Solberg is the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation’s (KSR) new assistant dean of development. While he may be new to the position, Julian is no stranger to kinesiology or the University of Alberta. Julian started working at the U of A in 2014 and prior to this he completed his undergraduate degree in kinesiology from the University of Regina.

Spend the next few minutes getting to know Julian!

What is your experience at KSR and the U of A?

I am forever grateful for how the U of A and the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation impacted my life. During my undergraduate program at the University of Regina I came here to do a practicum placement with the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club. After my practicum, I was offered a full-time job with the Oilers, but I still had one semester of classes left to complete in Regina. I reached out to the U of A and they welcomed me to their physical education and recreation program as a transfer student which allowed me to finish my last semester of classes here while working with the Oilers. I made Edmonton my home in 2008 — it’s where I met my wife and where we are now raising our three amazing children. All this wouldn’t have been possible without the opportunity KSR provided me.

What inspires you the most about donors?

The stories! I feel blessed when donors share stories about their family, their university experiences, their professional accomplishments and all the areas they are passionate about. Everyone has had a unique and special journey that brought them to where they are, and in my world, the one common thread that connects us all is the desire to give back to the U of A community.

For some donors, giving is a way of saying thank you for the support they received, and a way of ensuring the next generation is also set up for success. From tax-related incentives to honouring a loved one’s legacy, there are so many ways to make an impact.

What does leading with purpose mean to you?

I get to see first hand our incredible donors be leaders for our campus and community by giving back. They are leading with purpose by supporting the U of A and KSR with their philanthropy, their time, and their wisdom and experience. Their generosity makes it possible for the University of Alberta to continue to be a world leader in education and research.

If someone is interested in supporting KSR, where should they start?

I would love to connect with you and hear about your interests and answer any questions you may have.

When you decide to support the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, you have options to explore what best fits your intentions. Whether you want to make a one time, annual, or monthly donation, explore the tax savings associated with a gift of securities, or inspire future generations via Legacy Giving by including a bequest in your will, we will work with you to make your experience positive and rewarding.
