John Bunyan (1628-88) wrote the Pilgrim's Progress, one of the most read and translated works in English literature. Before publishing this classic, Bunyan spent twelve years in Bedford Jail for dissenting from laws requiring religious conformity. Could such a thing happen in today's society? What does the past teach us about law, church, and state? We will explore Bunyan's trial in three stages: i. a dramatic presentation based on his writings; ii. an appeal of his conviction argued before a panel of three Alberta judges; iii. a time for audience questions and discussion with insights from international scholars. Hosted by the Chester Ronning Centre in partnership with the International John Bunyan Society, the Department of Drama at the University of Alberta, and the Kule Institute for Advanced Study.
