Choosing your Course + Learner Level

The courses you precept depend on your practice, the level of learner you are interested in precepting, and the amount of time you have for student supervision. Generally, there are two levels of learners from which you can choose to precept (see below). Many preceptors will precept more than one level of learner to diversify their opportunities with students.

Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience

Students will require more direct supervision as they are just beginning their practice-based learning. These introductory experiences focus on socialization into the profession, communications skill development, and practicing systematic processes for providing patient centered care. If you enjoy teaching a new learner, helping them develop foundational skills, and are able to invest the time in direct supervision, this is a great place to start.

Placements include: Community Pharmacy Practice (4 weeks/160 hours), Acute Care/Inpatient Hospital Practice (4 weeks/160 hours).

Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience

If you would like to precept with limited direct supervision, an advanced learner may be a better match. Advanced students are expected to be more independent in their learning and have a broader knowledge base. Advanced learners include 4th year PharmD students and post-professional PharmD students.

Placements include: various practice settings (8 weeks/320 hours).
