This is a degree-completion program for medical laboratory technologists who already hold a general certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science.

Why study Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Alberta?

The BSc in MLS degree program, offered by the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is designed to provide a broad and well-rounded education allowing MLTs opportunities for advanced study in laboratory medicine disciplines as well as research. This can aid in career advancement or provide the foundation for further study.

Program Requirements

Non-Direct Entry

This program does not allow admission directly from high school. See requirements below for more details.

Admission Requirements:

In order to be eligible for admission to the post-professional certificate degree completion program applicants must have:

  1. Successfully completed the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) General Certificate
  2. Within the last five years either completed CSMLS general certification or have related work experience.

Additional Requirements:

  1. Official transcripts from technical institutes and clinical training sites, CSMLS certification, and other postsecondary institutions.
  2. Resumé.
  3. Letter indicating history of employment as a medical technologist with particular attention paid to the description of the type of work in which the applicant was involved. In this letter a statement of career goals and reasons for seeking admission to the BSc program in Medical Laboratory Science should be included.
