The Fine Arts Building (FAB) Gallery marks its 25th anniversary with a diverse and exciting season of exhibitions. The work of professional artists and designers, as well as students completing their formal training, will be highlighted in graduating student exhibitions, important traveling shows and other exhibitions organized by the Fine Arts Building Gallery.

The Fine Arts Building Gallery was opened in February 1987, recognizing a long standing need for space where students could professionally present their work - a place where students, the campus and broader Edmonton audience could see important exhibitions of contemporary and historic art and design. Celebrations: Works by Selected graduate Students, 1970- 1986, FAB Gallery's inaugural exhibition, featured painting, sculpture, printmaking, mixed media art works, industrial and graphic design by Art and Design alumni. Rick Chenier, then-chairman of the Department of Art and Design, said of the exhibition:

The Department is justifiably proud of its graduates, many of whom have gained national and international reputations, and believes that the accomplishments made evident by this exhibition and catalogue have been major and are of high quality. To underline these accomplishments, the exhibition is characterized by exhibitors' works from the time of their thesis production alongside works which have recently been accomplished as professionals in their respective disciplines.

The presentation of Alberta artists and designers at diverse points in their careers remains an important feature of FAB Gallery exhibition programming. Included in this anniversary year's programming are solo exhibitions of graduate students completing their Master of Fine Arts (MFA) and Master of Design (MDes) degrees at the University of Alberta, and group shows of students graduating with the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and the Bachelor of Design (BDes) degrees. These young artists and designers, individuals at the beginning of their professional careers, will become important contributors to the provincial, national and international art and design communities. Distinguished Art and Design Professor Liz Ingram states:

FAB Gallery provides students with essential hands-on professional experience through exhibitions of their own work, and also offers them the opportunity to view exhibitions first hand by designers and artists from around the world. FAB Gallery is a prime University showcase that acts as a bridge to the Edmonton community attracting many thousands of viewers to campus each year, enriching the cultural landscape of this city.

For the past 25 years, the Fine Arts Building Gallery has featured exhibitions of importance to the cultural and intellectual life of Albertans. These upcoming exhibitions for 2011-2012 will present issues of particular interest to the capital region: Quotationalism, Counterpoint: the aesthetics of post-colonialism, Transitions: work by technical staff from the department of Art & Design, The Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada and InSights: Visualizing Health Humanities II.
