Biography

MDes, Industrial Design, University of Alberta, 2003

Tim Antoniuk is an Associate Professor in Industrial Design, where he teaches classes in sustainable design, contemporary furniture, emerging economic design models and design theory. After studying business, sculpture and industrial design, Tim went on to co-found Hothouse (1992), a furniture design, manufacturing and retail group of companies that sold its products to hundreds of retail galleries around the world. Now a regular presenter/exhibitor at international design conferences and exhibitions on ideas that surround sustainable-desire, the emergence of a new design-based economy ('creative-economic-emergence'), and practice-based design research models, Professor Antoniuk continues to pursue new methods for creating sustainable and economically viable product-service-system-experiences. Since his move into academia, Tim has been the Principal Investigator on two major grants: an SSHRC Fine Arts Research Creation Grant (2005), and more recently, a Killam Cornerstone Grant (2009). Throughout this latter grant, titled Luxury of the North, he has been working with Droog/Renny Ramakers, Winy Maas/Delft University, and a collection of designers/researchers from across Canada and Holland on how Northern Canadian aesthetics, images, and cultural rituals could positively influence the development of future (sustainable) luxury products.
