Jérôme Melançon was born in New Brunswick, grew up in Québec and Ontario, and has been living in Western Canada since 2005 with ties in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Between 2008 and 2016 he taught a number of topics within political philosophy, phenomenology, and Canadian politics, as well as sociology and creative writing (poetry) at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta. He is currently teaching on topics related to the history of ideas, francophones living in minority contexts, diversity, literature, and popular culture. He is the author of two books of poetry in French and numerous scholarly articles on the themes of dissent, power, anti-colonialism, democracy, the role of critical intellectuals, and literature. He obtained his PhD in 2008 with a dissertation on Maurice Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology of politics from Université Paris-Diderot, and remains affiliated with its Centre de Sociologie des Pratiques et Représentations Politiques. His current research is located at the intersection of three directions: First, it develops a philosophy of democracy as personal and collective movement of inclusion, taking into account the various manners in which the self is instituted as chosen and as imposed. Second, it explores the possibility of a political philosophy of culture, taking into consideration the self-understanding and theorizing of Indigenous Peoples, immigrant groups to Canada, and the majority Anglophone and Francophone groups. And third, it deals with the history and present of philosophy as it takes place in Canada, among these different groups.
