The Doctor of Philosophy in Business program at the University of Alberta offers specializations in Accounting, Finance, Operations and Information Systems, Marketing, and Strategic Management and Organization – including macro and micro organizational behavior.

At any given time, there are between 50-70 students, with an entering class of 10-15 per year.

Career Outlook

There is substantial demand for business faculty at universities around the world. Many of our students obtain multiple offers for tenure-track positions, and starting salaries are usually between C$100,000 and C$200,000, depending on university and specialization.

Graduates of our program have obtained positions in prestigious universities throughout the world, including California-Berkeley, Emory, HEC (Paris), Hong Kong Institute of Science and Technology, Imperial College (London), Iowa, Ivey Business School at Western University, McGill, and the Wharton Business School at University of Pennsylvania.


Minimum Admissions Requirements

GMAT or GRE score: All applicants must submit their scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Your scores should be in the 80th percentile. There are no exceptions to this requirement.

English language proficiency: All applicants must demonstrate English Language proficiency prior to admission. There are no exceptions to this requirement. Earning a baccalaureate degree from an academic institution that is recognized by the University of Alberta and where the instruction of language is English is typically sufficient. If you have a degree from a non-English language university, then you must have either:

  1. A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 550 on the paper-based test.
  2. A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 88 (with a score of at least 20 in each of the individual skill areas) on the internet-based test.
  3. OR

  4. An IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of at least 6.5 with a band of 5 in each of the four areas.
  5. OR

  6. An overall minimum score of 59 on the Pearson Test of English Academic.
