A Basic homepage layout

This is a common layout used on homepages for University of Alberta websites. It consists of two rows, one that contains the big splash image at the top of the page, and a second row to contain this three-column layout. Left navigation is also turned on.

This particular column contains a Content component (which is what is containing these words) and a News Teaser component below it.

Two content columns and a sidebar

This row uses a three-column layout. The first column is set to a width of 5 and this column is set to a width of 4. Lastly, the sidebar is set to 3. As long as these column widths add up to 12, you can experiment with different column widths for your own layout.

Sidebar

We recommend making your sidebar no smaller than a width of 3.

You can make your sidebar smaller than this, but if you're going to add a Twitter feed or even a few lines of contact information, please consider legibility and ease of use for readers when building your columns.
