Awards and recognition for Education faculty, staff and students

Dr. Florence Glanfield in yellow patterned dress standing in front of yellow and green quiltThe U of A Faculty of Education has risen in the 2023 QS World University Rankings by Subject, moving up six spots to 81st in the world and fifth in Canada, thanks to work that shapes educational policies and curriculum at every level.

“I’m so grateful to our faculty, whose incredible teaching, research and community-engaged work are central to the national and international reputation reflected in these rankings, and to our talented and resourceful support staff for all they do to lift us up,” says Dean of Education Jennifer Tupper.

“The commitment of faculty and staff to our students and our communities, and to fostering an atmosphere where excellence and innovation can thrive, is unflagging even as global challenges continue to reshape the field of education.”


Congratulations to the Education faculty members and instructors who have been honoured by the Government of Alberta with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal for significant contributions to the province.

Congratulations to educational psychology professor Cheryl Poth on being awarded, with co-author Peggy Shannon Baker, the Division D (Measurement and Research Methodologies) Significant Contributions to Research Methodology from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) for the article “State of the Methods: Leveraging Design Possibilities of Qualitatively Oriented Mixed Methods Research” in the Sage International Journal of Qualitative Methods.


Congratulations to elementary education professor Carla Peck on being recognized by Edmonton Public Teachers Local No. 37 with their Honorary Award in appreciation for her service to public education.


The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research recently announced the recipients of the 2023 Graduate Student Teaching Awards, which recognize the outstanding teaching of graduate students.

Congratulations to Jennifer Burton (Elementary Education), Darcy Courtland (Elementary Education), Katherine Koskie (Secondary Education) and Megan Tipler (Secondary Education) on their awards!

Yina Lui and Megan Tipler were also selected for 2023 Graduate Students’ Association Recognition Awards last month. Congratulations to Yina for receiving the Graduate Student Research Assistant Award and to Megan for receiving the Graduate Student Principal Instructor Award!


Congratulations to PhD candidate in counselling psychology Emily Mack on receiving a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, valued at $50,000 over three years, for her research project "Fictional stories with real consequences: A study of adolescents, parents, and suicide."


Congratulations to Education students Brendan Simone (Golden Bears cross-country), Cara Lang (Pandas soccer), and Ryan Townsend (Golden Bears tennis) on receiving the 2023 President’s Trophy, which recognizes and celebrates student-athletes who are in their fourth or fifth year of eligibility and have made an exceptional overall contribution to their team as outstanding athletes, leaders and role models.

Congratulations to fourth-year Education student and Golden Bears basketball forward Adam Paige on receiving the Canada West Student-Athlete Community Service Award for his excellence on the court, in the classroom and in his community. Adam is the first Bear to win this award since Todd Bergen-Henengouwen in 2013, and third Golden Bear in total.
