Graduate Student Teaching Awards

Announcing this Year's Graduate Student Teaching Award RecipientsValue: The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) will provide faculties with a certificate of recognition for each recipient.

It is time to nominate!

The 2024 Graduate Student Teaching Award nominations are open for faculties to submit by March 18, 2024, using the allocations identified. Faculties will follow the existing adjudication process described in UAPPL with note to the changes to the policy by the GPS Review of Teaching Awards Working Group that were presented and accepted at the GPS Council on January 17, 2024.

  1. Selection Process

The deadline for receipt of these selections will take place in the winter term each year.

 2. Eligibility

Added Students who have made significant contributions to the teaching mandate of a department or faculty, outside of a teaching assistantship, may also be eligible.

Change the definition of good academic standing to “Minimum GPA of 2.7 or higher as determined by the nominating department/faculty

Four best practices that GPS supports to put into practice immediately that align with the Provost's EDI review are:

  1. Self-Nomination Process: To allow students to self-nominate to their department in addition to departmental recommendations.
  2. Adjudication Process.  The adjudication process for this award varies across campus, depending on available people and resources.  Adjudication of the nominees should be transparent and include at least two adjudicators at the department and faculty level.
  3. Student Feedback.  Adding a few questions to the SPOT (Student Perspectives of Teaching) surveys that reflect the teaching qualities of teaching assistants would be useful for the adjudication process as it could provide more evidence of excellence in the teaching contributions of graduate students.
  4. Equitable allocation.  To align with other award allocation practices, a minimum of one graduate student teaching award would be allocated to a faculty/department.  This would establish more diversity and inclusion in recognising student contribution to campus teaching.
