The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Alberta provides undergraduate and postgraduate training in emergency medicine, acute care, and ambulatory care. In an acute care setting, we provide opportunities in bedside research, health outcomes research, and scholarly pursuit in medical education.

We offer a specialist training program in Emergency Medicine accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. We also train residents in the Emergency Medicine Certification program of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.

Emergency Medicine is a mandatory Year 4 MD undergraduate rotation at the U of A. In addition to its Emergency Medicine residents, the Department provides a mandatory rotation for all postgraduate medicine trainees at the University. For residents in many disciplines, Emergency Medicine is often their only exposure to undifferentiated, acutely ill patients.

We also provide acute care experience for practicing physicians through the Rural Physician Action Plan.

Our faculty members have received numerous awards for teaching. The Department has also been recognized nationally and internationally for innovation in resident evaluation, simulation training, and resident wellness.
