Intensive French Language Development Week for Teachers

Teachers are, above all, language role models: the quality of their French directly influences the quality of their students’ French. To maintain a high level of linguistic accuracy and renew teaching practices, targeted professional development is essential.

The École de langues at Campus Saint-Jean therefore offers an intensive French language development week, specifically designed for current and future teachers of French as a first language or a second language. This program combines linguistic reinforcement tailored to participants’ needs with cultural development and hands-on workshops, providing a comprehensive experience that can be immediately applied in the classroom.

Training Objectives

  • Strengthen skills in spoken, written, and reading French, with personalized support.

  • Enrich Francophone cultural knowledge and integrate authentic content into the classroom.

  • Discover and experiment with innovative, playful, and engaging teaching methods.

  • Leave with a turnkey pedagogical toolkit: activities, worksheets, digital tools, and ready-to-use lesson sequences.

 

Target Audience

This professional development program is aimed at teachers or future teachers in immersion and French-speaking schools who wish to improve their language skills and explore teaching approaches that promote French language acquisition among their students.

Required Level: B2

 

Content and Activities

The intensive week alternates between language practice, thematic workshops, and cultural exploration:

Linguistic Reinforcement (9 am to noon)

  • Targeted workshops focused on language aspects that often present difficulties for learners.

  • Interactive activities adapted to participants’ levels and needs.

Best Practices in Teaching (1 pm to 3 pm)

  • Teaching French through Francophone comics, popular songs, language games, visual arts, and digital media.

  • Strategies to foster oral expression, creativity, and student engagement.

Cultural Exploration

  • Discovery of contemporary Francophone resources.

  • Immersive activities offering an authentic experience of Francophonie.

 

Location

In person at Campus Saint-Jean (University of Alberta), in a stimulating and welcoming Francophone environment.

SUMMER SESSION 2026

Registration is available for one week or for both weeks. The programs are designed to be complementary while remaining fully independent, offering maximum flexibility.

Demystifying French Grammar

Language development:

A series of refresher workshops based on parts of speech (verbs, prepositions, pronouns, etc.)

Objectives:

  • To understand the causes of errors in French according to different parts of speech
  • To develop a better command of grammatical structures

Educational workshops:

In the afternoon, participants will take part in various workshops to discover teaching approaches that make learning French fun (Exploring comic strips, Playing with Anglicisms, Learning through play, etc.)

Developing Students’ Linguistic Awareness

Language development:

A series of workshops designed to equip teachers to better understand the causes of their pupils’ mistakes and to implement strategies that promote greater language proficiency.

Objectives:

  • To analyse the main causes of errors in French
  • To encourage pupils to ask themselves the right questions to avoid the pitfalls of French

Teaching workshops:

In the afternoon, participants will take part in practical workshops covering topics such as phonetics, creative writing, cooperative games, etc.

Format: In Person
Cost: $500 per week / $850 for double registration (both weeks) for the same participant
Duration: 25 hours per week
