Degree Programs
The Department of Medicine offers both MSc and PhD in Medicine as well as an MSc in Medicine with a Specialization in Translational Medicine. We offer a diverse program encompassing all 4 CIHR research pillars from basic/fundamental sciences to clinical research to population health to outcomes research.Thesis-Based Master's Programs
- Over the duration of their program, students in thesis-based master's programs must pay the equivalent of at least one full year of program fees. In addition to thesis registration, students must complete a minimum of *9 of academic coursework. Notwithstanding the above, students are required to fulfill the department's thesis-based program requirements as approved by Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Council and as stated in the department's graduate program requirements.
Thesis-Based Master of Medicine with Specialization in Translational Medicine Program
This program is a comprehensive training program for students looking for in-depth exposure to Translational Medicine in keeping with the current trends in modern medical research and education. In addition to completing and successfully defending a thesis, students are expected to complete three out of four of the following courses:
- MED 602 Translational Research Training Program, Module I (offered Fall 2019)
- MED 604 Translational Research Training Program, Module II (offered Winter 2020)
- MED 606 Translational Research Training Program, Module III (offered Fall 2020)
- MED 608 Translational Research Training Program, Module IV (offered Winter 2021)
All students registered in this program are required to attend 2 retreats to obtain their MSc in Medicine with Specialization in Translational Medicine. Students wanting to pursue this program will have to meet the Department's normal requirements for admission as well as those of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. Each student is supervised by a staff member who has shown commitment to the project and will provide all personal and research funding. Students are encouraged to apply for funding that is either internal or external to the University of Alberta. For MD research trainees, personal funding is available through external funding agencies, the Postgraduate Medical Education Office or through clinical departments or divisions. The time required to complete the coursework is two years. The time required to complete the program will vary according to the previous training of the applicant and the nature of the research undertaken.
Doctoral Programs
Over the duration of their program, students must pay the equivalent of at least three full years of program fees. In addition to thesis registration, students must complete a minimum of *12 of academic coursework. Notwithstanding the above, students are required to fulfill the department's doctoral program requirements as approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research Council and as stated in the department's graduate program requirements.For any inquiries, please contact our graduate program advisors.
