Department of Medicine Awards

The Department of Medicine Awards celebrate the outstanding people whose dedication, innovation, and leadership strengthen our department and improve the lives of others. Each year, we recognize faculty and staff members who have made exceptional contributions to research, education, clinical care, mentorship, administration, and teamwork. 

These awards reflect our commitment to excellence and acknowledge the individuals and teams whose achievements advance our mission while inspiring colleagues, learners, and the broader community. Award recipients are honoured annually at the Department of Medicine's Annual Celebration Dinner.

NOMINATION DEADLINE: 

All nominations are due March 15th. If March 15th falls on a weekend, the submission deadline will be the next business day.

 


Career Development Awards

  • Thomas J Marrie Mentorship Award
    • This award recognizes a faculty member who best exemplifies the qualities of a mentor.
  • Jonathan B Meddings Clinical Innovation Award
    • This award recognizes clinical innovations that impact patient care in a positive and meaningful way.
  • Cooperation, Collaboration and Teamwork Award
    • This team award recognizes those groups who have been successful in creating environments where the professional characteristics of cooperation, collaboration and teamwork have proven effective for teaching, research, patient care and/or administration, thus representing operational role models in the academic environment and/or the larger community.

J. Charles "Chuck" Morrison Award

This annual award is named in honour of Chuck Morrison for the decades of service he provided to the Department as the Director of Administrative Services.

This award recognizes the significant contributions made by an office support staff to the Department of Medicine.

Medical Education Publication Award

This award is given to a first, senior or corresponding author for a Publication in a top-ranked journal or peer-reviewed compendium, with the work having been completed at the University of Alberta.

Research Awards

  • Basic Science Publication Award
    • This award recognizes a scientist who is the Principal Investigator of a research publication in a top-ranked journal, with the work having been completed at the U of A.
  • Clinical Investigation Publication Award
    • This award recognizes a scientist who is the Principal Investigator of a clinical investigation research publication in a top-ranked journal, with the work having been completed at the U of A.
  • Clinical Faculty Research Award
    • This award recognizes a clinical faculty member who is the senior or first author on a published work. This work could be original research, basic or clinical, reports on clinical trials or drug studies, or a major review article.
  • Paul W. Armstrong Excellence in Research Award
    • This award honours excellence in scientific research and medicine.
  • Translational Research Award
    • This award honours excellence in applied clinical scientific research.
