Division of General Internal Medicine

About Us

General Internal Medicine (GIM) subspecialists, also known as general internists, diagnose and care for acutely ill patients, many of whom also have complex multi-system disorders. The consultative and direct medical care they provide includes disease prevention, early detection of disease, screening, patient education, chronic disease management and post-admission transitional care back to the primary physician. General internists also consult on the management of medical conditions during periods of high stress such as before, during and after surgery, and pregnancy.

In the Edmonton zone, the top five diagnoses leading to a GIM admission are pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, diabetes, severe urinary tract infections (urosepsis) and alcohol/drug toxicity.
