Dr. Narmin Kassam, Chair of the Department of Medicine

Narmin Kassam

MD, MHPE, FRCPC, FACP

Dr. Narmin Kassam is Professor and Chair of Medicine at the U of A and the Edmonton Zone Clinical Department Head of Medicine with Alberta Health Services. She completed her medical training at the U of A in 1996 and holds a Master’s in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

A graduate of the U of A Gold College Academic Leadership Program and the prestigious Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Fellowship at Drexel University, Dr. Kassam has held numerous leadership roles, including Resident Training Director, Division Director, and Associate Department Clinical Chair.

Dr. Kassam played a key role in launching Alberta’s provincial digital health record, Connect Care, and founded the Edmonton Zone Virtual Hospital Program. Nationally, she helped establish General Internal Medicine as a recognized subspecialty in 2013 and led the rollout of Competence by Design in 2021. She currently serves as Chair of the Royal College Canada International Board of Directors and is a past Governor of the American College of Physicians Alberta Chapter.

Dr. Kassam’s leadership has been recognized with major awards, including the CSIM Osler Award and the 2024 ACP Distinguished Member Excellence Award. She continues to advance quality improvement and education initiatives across the province.
